Why is this measure important?

Watercourses are the ultimate receivers for stormwater collected and carried by the municipal stormwater drainage system. Tracking this measure is important to prevent flooding, erosion, bank instability, damage to nearby infrastructure, and impacts to water quality and the aquatic and riparian environment. Remedial actions will always be necessary, as these features are subject to ongoing natural processes. As such, a target of 95% represents an achievable equilibrium between watercourse dynamics and the state of good repair.

What progress are we making?

The City is maintaining 95% of watercourses in good condition, meeting the target and remaining stable through 2024 to 2026. This reflects ongoing investment in stormwater ponds that help filter pollutants, manage runoff, and protect watercourses from flooding and erosion. More than 45 stormwater ponds have been restored over the past 13 years, and the City will continue restoring about 12 ponds each year to meet provincial maintenance requirements. Ongoing monitoring and studies support proactive maintenance and help protect water quality, nearby infrastructure, and natural habitats.

How is this measured?

This measure tracks the state of good repair of watercourses which are the ultimate receivers for stormwater collected and carried by the municipal stormwater drainage system.
