Why is this measure important?

Stormwater ponds play a vital role in protecting water quality, mitigating flood risks, and maintaining the health of local ecosystems.

Maintaining these ponds to provincial standards ensures that stormwater infrastructure keeps pace with urban growth, safeguards public safety, and supports climate resilience in Brampton.

What progress are we making?

Brampton is maintaining a very high level of performance in managing its stormwater infrastructure, with 98% of City-owned stormwater ponds meeting service level targets in 2024, a level that is expected to remain stable through 2025 and 2026. This strong performance reflects sustained investment in pond maintenance and restoration, including the dredging and sediment removal of more than 45 ponds over the past 13 years.

To continue protecting water quality and reducing flood risk as the city grows, Brampton is advancing a proactive maintenance program that will restore approximately 12 ponds per year, aligning with provincial requirements for lifecycle maintenance. In parallel, the City is undertaking a bathymetry study to improve data accuracy and better assess pond capacity and condition. Together, these actions support progress toward the long-term target of 100% compliance, strengthening environmental resilience, safeguarding downstream communities, and ensuring stormwater systems remain effective in a changing climate.

How is this measured?

The percentage of City-owned stormwater ponds that meet service level targets for restricting pollutants in stormwater runoff from entering watercourses, and for the ability of watercourses to convey flood flows without overflowing, causing erosion, or flooding areas downstream.
